Well said! The property we were looking at seems to be out of reach and I've kind of stalled in my plans to move off grid for that reason and a few others. My husband tore 3 out of 4 rotator cuff muscles and has to have surgery which would leave it to me (with my CFS) to sort out moving an entire household and farm. My son (w/Aspergers) does NOT want to move to the east side with us but at the moment, he doesn't know to care for himself and I'm not dumping him on my elderly parents. There's another glitch in my plan-aging parents I don't want to leave...everything just seems so difficult.

Still, the yearning for that sort of life isn't easing off. You might be a little higher in elevation than I can do, since I have a herd of goats that wouldn't appreciate 30 degrees below, much less plowing snow that's up to their necks. And my plan (eventually) is to support the farm WITH the goats. If I could do that where I'm at now, I'd probably just stay. Even with the rain...

Life has many challenges. However you can be more self sufficient, just start where you are!

The people on the property next to ours have goats, sheep, horses… it can be done. However, the catch is so many people here have goats/sheep etc of their own so making that an income source can be tough. The demand can be low. Make sure, wherever you go, the need exists.

It’s vital that everyone involved be part of the plan for it to succeed. Sometimes that means waiting; sometimes it means a new plan; sometimes it means going in different directions. Like I said, life has many challenges. Wishing you clarity and strength.

I always love reading your articles! They are just so ‘spot on’! I can’t hardly even see any signs of the ‘culture’ that made this great nation! I retired about 3y ago and am just focusing on our homestead and being as self-reliant as possible. Our world is just upside-down and we have tried to disconnect from it as much as possible. We spend time with our family who are all live close by and are like-minded. It seems like each family possesses a unique and essential ‘skill’ that is used to support one another. As it should be. Time to hunker down, gather your loved ones and hang on tight! It’s going to be a wild ride….

I visited Japan in 2017 and never saw any locks on bicycles parked in front of businesses. When I lost a backpack on a busy train, the staff called ahead and had a conductor at another station grab it and hold it for me. Nothing has been taken from the bag.

Culture is very important!

That’s wonderful! John was stationed in Japan when he was in the Marines and had similar experiences. It seems tempting to move there but I’m afraid outsiders moving in would eventually ruin it for them.
