WEIRD. I had a mystery spy helicopter too! Mine had a huge round dangly thing below it - 'ground penetrating radar' for the mines nearby, apparently. I hid in the container whenever it went by.

I've read 'Quiet'! I think I might be due for a re-read.

You wouldn't know it to look at my social media but I'm with you. It's brutal. Have you ever downloaded TikTok? Don't - just, don't.

We've seen a number of helicopters with round dangly things under them but, in our case, they were huge buckets for scooping up water from the lakes and dumping them on fires. It's spooky to have those go over your house because you know the fire is close!

Never been on TikTok at all. I left all social media about 5 years ago and haven't looked back. What surprised me most is how many "friends" I lost because I became too inconvenient to talk to. Email used to be the "lazy" form of communication but, with texting and DMs, emailing is even too much work now.

I think it may be easier for those of us who are a bit older to leave social media (or even the internet) behind since we remember not even having cell phones. What do you think? Do you feel like social media in some form is a necessity for your generation? That's a really broad question (sorry) but I'm curious.

Enjoying your blog, BTW.

Thank you! I’m enjoying yours 😊

I’d have to agree with you, I’m on that cusp age as an ‘elder millennial’, so I remember childhood without cell phones but I got a phone in my last year of high school.

People that know I have limited cell data, have my phone number but still message me through social media instead of texting.. I haven’t figured that out yet.

I could take it or leave it but the youngster generation that uses Snapchat to message- and don’t know life without wifi.. I think they’d be lost if the world went offline.

I know plenty of old folks who would be lost as well, so... with age does not always come wisdom. :-)

I nodded along with everything here but really loved seeing your HughesNet dish - I live in a very rural area close to urban areas and none of my friends even understand the complexities of satellite internet! You very obviously do. Whichever president promised broadband for all sure hasn’t come through yet.

HughesNet doesn't even seem to understand the dilemmas of rural life, as they kept sending us EMAILS about scheduling their Service Techs to come out. Ha! Our email goes through satellite, which was out! Ugh!

We did learn from speaking to one former service tech, though, that they're contracted and paid about $150 per call - period. They have to provide their own gas, their own pole and concrete for installation, their own cell phone... Most don't do it very long, once they figure out that they're actually losing money. The race to the bottom continues...

Oh my goodness yes! We’ve experienced that kind of service and have chatted with techs too. It’s a horrible deal for the workers 😞
